If I were to pick the five most important resources that impacted our Home School and my children while they were growing up, the Wisdom and the Miller Series would be one of the top three.  The character lessons which they learned from the stories, because they were based on Biblical truths, have made a life-long difference in my now-grown children’s lives.  I recommend this series to every young mom I meet and cannot say enough good about it.  I am always surprised when a young mom has not heard about it, so I want to highlight this series, and let you all know about it!  When looking for a giveaway to celebrate my spiritual birthday, which is October 6, I wanted to share with you something that would make a real and lasting difference in your family’s life.  This is it.

Guest-posting today is my good friend, and author, Kris Hage.  Kris has graciously sponsored this giveaway today of a complete set of Wisdom and the Millers books. She is including the Character Companion for the Miller Family Series, which she wrote, and Green Pastures Press published in 2010, as well as the Colorful Characters Coloring Book for 2 to 5-year-olds!  Read about this series and Kris’s experience using it in her own homeschooling, as well as details on how you can enter the giveaway below.  I’m so glad to have you guest-posting today, Kris–thank you so much!  Please welcome Kris, and if you want to order any of these books for yourself or others, contact her (details below).

The giveaway includes the books pictured here. These and other workbooks pictured below are also available for purchase.

Home educating gives us not only the opportunity to supply our children with personality-tailored academics, but also the opportunity to instill in them character qualities that honor the Lord Jesus Christ.  When my husband and I first started home educating in 1990, we could not find much in the way of books or curriculum to help us teach our children Godly character.

Sample page from the Make and Do Workbook, finished by Kris's little girl.

The additional Make and Do workbook, for Preschool-1st grade, has activities relating to all five Miller Family Books.

How I Used the Miller Series and the Character Companion with My Small Children

So I put together my own list of important Christian virtues that I saw in God’s Word–50 of them–and matched them up to each letter of the alphabet, putting a decorative letter on each one for the children to color.  Among the C’s, we studied what the Bible says about being confident; in the P’s we learned what persevering and being prudent are all about; we even discovered the Greek word for hospitality when we got to the X’s–xenophilic.

Then I went searching the Scriptures for verses about each characteristic and at least one person in the Bible who portrayed each quality in his or her life.  Lastly, I found a story in the Miller Family Series (Green Pastures Press) to illustrate the practical daily living out of Godly character.

One of two additional workbooks available. This one goes with Wisdom and the Millers.

Miller Family Series of Books

  • Wisdom and the Millers is full of verses from Proverbs and how the Miller children learned to apply them to everyday occurrences.
  • Storytime with the Millers has meaningful lessons taught in captivating stories for younger children.
  • School Days with the Millers teaches Godly character in a small, Mennonite school setting, which is very applicable to the home school.
  • Prudence and the Millers gives practical wisdom for health and safety in captivating stories.
  • Missionary Stories with the Millers, the fifth book of the series, is full of true stories of missionaries and how they displayed Godly character all over the world.

These five storybooks contain stories my children grew to love, even talking about them into their adulthood.

How a Homeschool Mom Became Published

Years later, a few friends asked me if I knew of any good character curriculum.  I gladly made them a copy of my character quality study and told them about the Miller Family books.  One of these friends encouraged me to see if the publishers of the Miller Family Series would publish my worksheets.  What began as a homemade Godly character Bible study, typed out on an old-fashioned typewriter, became the Character Companion for the Miller Family Series, published by Green Pastures Press in 2010.

Green Pastures Press changed my decorative letters into beautiful animal drawings to illustrate each character quality.  Job 12:7-9 says,

“But ask now the beasts and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee:  or speak to the earth and it shall teach thee and the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee.  Who knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this?”

One of the additional workbooks, for 3rd grade and up. To be used with Prudence stories as an elementary health curriculum.

Ideas for Using The Miller Family Series with Older Children

Several Scriptures are given to read.  Older children can practice finding the passages in their Bibles and reading them aloud.  There is also room for them to list the Scriptures in the order they would appear in the Bible, to enhance their ability to find their way around in the most important Book.  Then they learn the definition of the character quality, as well as some synonyms and antonyms.

Several options are also given for stories to read in the Miller books, giving the choice of reading only your favorite or one story a day for 3-4 days.  Spending a week focusing on one character quality provides opportunity to enjoy the suggested Miller stories and to apply the Scriptures studied to your own family life.

Ideas for Using The Miller Family Series with Younger Children

The children color the animals and discuss how each portrays the given characteristic.  Enlarging their wonderful animal illustrations, Green Pastures Press then produced the Colorful Characters Coloring Book so the 2-through 5-year-olds can color while enjoying the stories and Bible verses right alongside their older siblings.  For each character quality, there is a short Bible verse and the name of each quality is in traceable letters for printing practice.

These two workbooks, combined with the five Miller Family storybooks, make a wonderful set of tools to use in teaching children what Godly character looks like straight from the Bible, enhanced by God-honoring literature.

    1. Layne,
Thanks for subscribing and for the comment. I would have to say that maybe it’s because of the Scripture that these books are as effective as they are. The stories are based on real people, and the Bible verses deal so well with the heart of all of us. I would always get something out of it, too, whenever I read a story to the kids. Hope to see you again soon.

  4. Subscribed via e-mail. I have not used the books, but would love to try them. Kris was my son’s preschool teacher for a homeschool group last year and was wonderful!
